Denmark's Annual Bike Report

Many economists, particularly in the US, take it as an article of faith that cars are good for the economy. It makes sense: people pour money into the care and feeding of their automobiles at a strong rate, and keeping up the roads structures that support them also creates jobs and revenue. This is often used as reason not to support alternatives like public transport and bikes.

Denmark is demonstrating that this may not be entirely true. In the Danish capital, Copenhagen, nearly 80% of the population commutes by bike, many of whom bike year round (a few enterprising Danes have even developed pedal-powered snow plows). However, in the most recent annual bike report in the city, they estimate that if health care costs are included in the calculations, biking's better for the economy by a fair sight.
