The Sinking World

One of several mind-boggling feats of engineering created off the coast of Dubai, UAE is the World Island archipelago. A series of manufactured islands designed to look like a map of the world when viewed aerially, the project was begun in 2003 with the expectation that the ultrawealthy would snap up parts of the globe. Largely abandoned due to lack of buying interest as part of the ongoing financial crisis, the islands appear to be sinking and becoming less distinct. Click above to read more.

Preah Vihear Temple

Nestled on the remote highland border between Cambodia and Thailand is this temple built by Hindu devotees in the 9th century and dedicated to Shiva. As the influence of Hinduism in these areas waned and gave way to Buddhism, the predominant faith in both countries, the temple was adapte to Buddhist use. It still retained many distinctively Hindu artifacts, including a gold statue of a dancing Shiva. Internal tensions and shifting borders have meant that each side has had variable access to the site, which was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.

However, over the last week or so, fighting has broken out across the border over access to the temple. Fighting has not only injured several and killed a few, but has badly damaged parts of the temple. No solution to solve the fighting over it has been accepted by both sides yet.
