Sweaters for Oily Penguins

New Zealand is currently going through one of its most significant environmental disasters ever, after an oil tanker hit the North Island of New Zealand last month, dumping hundreds of tons of oil into the water. Many varieties of marine life have been negatively impacted by the spill, but there is a rather unique relief effort going on around New Zealand's population of Blue and Fairy Penguins: knitters are making them sweaters.

The idea behind the penguin sweaters is that it will absorb the oil without them ingesting it during their normal grooming. Also, the sweaters will keep them warm, even while wet (yay, wool!), which their feathers are less able to do when oily. In the meantime, I give you penguins in sweaters.

Give me a little smile...

Believe it or not, this is actually a cross section of a piece of dune grass, put under a microscope. It's funny what turns up when you look very, very closely at things. In fact, this comes from a whole blog dedicated to microscope images, Beyond the Human Eye/

For those complaining about it being cold and wet

"Detroit circa 1917. "Ice fountain, Washington Boulevard." The big icicle with a small request, discreetly stated on that unobtrusive little sign near the man: PLEASE. The rest of the message is up to your imagination." From Shorpy, a blog of high-res images from before 1950 and from as far back as 1850.
