Happy Lithuanian Book Smugglers Day (and my mom's birthday, Happy Birthday Mom!)
From 1866-1904, Russian authorities outlawed books in Lithuanian written in the Latin alphabet (which is what this blog is written in) in exchange for ones written in the Cyrillic alphabet (this one: фиолетовый). The Russian government believed that Lithuanians were too influenced by the West and wanted to "Russify" them, hence having to learn the Cyrillic, aka Russian, alphabet. In response, scores of people risked their lives to smuggle Lithuanian texts written in the Latin alphabet into Russia. One of these smugglers, Jurgis Bielinis, was born today, which is why Book Smuggling day is today. Learn more here.
