"U.S. History of the 19th Century" Handout

Review: What events led to the Industrial Revolution in the United States, and why did it develop primarily in the Northern States? 1. Who was Samuel Slater, what was "Slater's Mill" and what was the time period of this development? 2. How was this "factory system" different from the way cloth was made prior to this time? 3. who was Eli Whitney, and what did he invent that improved the situation for cotton growers? (what year was this?) 4. How did the factory system - later more developed in the big mills of Lowell, Massachusetts - affect the price, and thus the demand for Cotton clothing? 5. How did this development of Southern land affect the growth of slavery as an Institution in the Southern states? 6. How did all these developments weave together the economies of both the Northern and Southern States?
