The Beach Beasts of Theo Jansen

It's hard to say where the line between art and science is in the work of Theo Jansen. While his theoretical work looks at the history of biological evolution, his art is an experimental celebration of the same. His moving sculptures, engineered to run fully on the power of their environment, primarily from wind, he describes as "artificial life." Inspired by structures found in natural life, Jansen's sculptures walk the beaches in his native Netherlands in uncannily naturalistic ways. Click above to see more of his "Strandbeests" (Beach Beasts) or look him up on YouTube to watch them walk.
