Mindfulness Home Practice

after day 3 (Thurs, Sept 8)

Between now and September 15:

Choose one day when you are about to begin your academic homework.

Take 1-2 minutes before starting your homework to practice mindful breathing.  It’s important you be in a room where you won’t be disturbed by others.  Set a timer and follow these steps:

1. Sitting on a chair or on the floor, allow your body to get into an upright yet relaxed position.

2. Feet making contact with the floor, hands resting comfortably on your lap.

3. Let your eyes close, or look down.

4. Begin to focus your attention on the sensations of your breath.  Try to keep your attention on the place in your body where you feel the inhale and the exhale the most.  It might be in your nose, your chest or abdomen, or some other place in your body.

Remember:

If your mind wanders, that’s okay and normal!  You can say to yourself, “thinking, thinking.”  Or if you notice your mind has gone into the past, you can say to yourself, “memory”; if it’s gone into the future, you can say, “planning.”  And gently bring your attention back to the sensation of your breathing.

And if you notice an emotion coming up, you can note that, too:  “Nervous,” “tired,” “happy,” etc.  And gently bring your attention back to the sensation of your breathing.

We will talk about this experience in class on Thurs, Sept 15th.  I will hand out a short reflection sheet for you to write about what this was like for you.
