Science Experiment Format Handout

Science: Format for Experiment Reports The scientific method for gaining new knowledge requires experimentation under controlled conditions. since other scientists may want to verify the results of a particular experiment, we prepare special reports, in this format: TITLE: what is the title of the experiment? SUMMARY: In no more than a paragraph, tell:
  • What topic are we studying in science
  • The purpose of this experiment
PROCEDURE: What conditions did we set up for this experiment?
  1. Make a list of all the materials used for this experiment
  2. List the steps used in setting up the experiment: What did you do first, last?
  3. Sketch or describe the apparatus used.
HYPOTHESIS: Your hypothesis: what is your educated guess about the outcome of this experiment? OBSERVATIONS: What facts (data) did we observe when we performed the experiment?
  • Organize this data into tables, charts and graphs
  • Include any sketches, photographs, sound recording, and/or written summaries of what you observed and experienced
DATA ANALYSIS:
  • Do the data support your hypothesis? Why/Why not?: What patterns or relationships do we see in the data?
  • Is there data that we did not expect?
SUGGESTIONS:
  • Were there any aspects of the experiment procedure that may lead to errors? Was the data properly "controlled"?
  • do you now have a new hypothesis you wish to test?
  • Do you have any new experiments to propose?
*Your report can be typed, or hand-written. All work must be legible and neat.
