Denmark's Annual Bike Report

Many economists, particularly in the US, take it as an article of faith that cars are good for the economy. It makes sense: people pour money into the care and feeding of their automobiles at a strong rate, and keeping up the roads structures that support them also creates jobs and revenue. This is often used as reason not to support alternatives like public transport and bikes.

Denmark is demonstrating that this may not be entirely true. In the Danish capital, Copenhagen, nearly 80% of the population commutes by bike, many of whom bike year round (a few enterprising Danes have even developed pedal-powered snow plows). However, in the most recent annual bike report in the city, they estimate that if health care costs are included in the calculations, biking's better for the economy by a fair sight. Click above to see a summary or click here to read the full annual report (in English).

April Fool's Day Jokes You Kinda Wish were Real

As a follow up to director James Cameron's deep-sea adventures in the Mariana Trench of the South Pacific, some clever jerk came up with what they imagined professional adventurous rich dude Sir Richard Branson would come up with to one-up Cameron. Said clever jerk (who may well be good Sir Richard himself) announced the Virgin Volcanic project, a specially-designed vehicle that would take Branson and celebrity passengers Tom Hanks, Seth Green and Will.i.am into the molten core of the earth, entering through an active volcano.

It's just this side of what Branson does anyway. His aspirations to space and deep-sea tourism, Virgin Galactic and Virgin Oceanic, respectively, are no joke. Click above to visit the site and read more about the speculative journey to the center of the Earth.
